Movie Review

Congratulate me . I made it through Cloverfield without getting dizzy or sick at my stomach. I am not sure what to think of this movie , it was action packed for sure but the action doesn't start happening until near the middle of the movie. You may think that leaves time for a whole lot of action but that is not true , Cloverfield is barely 80 minutes long. The constant moving of the camera is reminiscent of a toddler trying to film all the family action at Christmas . Sometimes you get a face but mostly you get everything from the floor to a picture on the wall and most of the time it is out of focus. The person behind the camera , Hutt , is very annoying talking constantly through the movie and at times I wanted to scream " Shut Up , Please!!!" . Don't get me wrong , the monster was awesome when you got to see it for more than a few seconds. This thing was on a rampage , he spared no building or street or even person in his way . The movie offers no explanation of how or why this monster came to be and why New York City was targeted . The end leaves it open for a sequel ( at least I hope or some background at least!) because it leaves all loose ends well loose . I like my movies tied up at the end with a neat little bow so I don't have to scratch my leaving the theater and wondering " what happened next?" or wait years for a sequel. Enough about Cloverfield and on to 27 Dresses .

I really enjoyed this movie. It was very sweet , funny and somewhat predictable but these days what isn't?
The premise was easy to follow , no nudity or sex scenes and great performances from all the actors. I laughed out loud and forgot all about that monster that ate New York ! I highly recommend 27 Dresses but view Cloverfield at your own risk .

What's Going On Around Here

I encourage everyone to join the Nashville Symphony's Soundcheck program for college students.
It is easy and free to sign up and you will be able to purchase two tickets to select Symphony performances for $10 each the day of the show. The shows selected are usually very good and include great guest conductors or singers. The 2008-2009 season lineup is fantastic and it includes local favorites Vince Gill and rocker Ben Folds.
Also coming up in Nashville :
Linkin Park performs at The Sommet Center February 26.
Monty Python's Spamalot begins at TPAC on February 12 and runs through the Feb.17
Brad Paisley rolls into town February 15 and will surely rock the Sommet Center !
Casting Crowns will perform at the Sommet Center on April 19

Over Her Dead Body starring Eva Longoria Parker and Paul Rudd opens Friday,Feb.1
The Eye starring Jessica Alba opens today January 28.

There is not much happening in music releases this week unless you are into rap , which I am not so I won't bore you with the details of those releases.
I am looking forward to next Tuesday " Super Tuesday" as it has been deemed by politicos but it is super for me for another reason.  Mellow rocker Jack Johnson's highly anticipated new album  Sleep Through The Static will be released . Johnson's music always puts me in a good mood and his lyrics are light and simple and the music breezy and reminiscent of a relaxing night on a tropical beach . I can't wait!

This Weekend

This weekend I will treat myself to a couple of movies; after all my homework is done of course!
I am thinking of watching 27 Dresses and Cloverfield, two very different choices but let me explain myself.
First, I highly enjoy sweet, saccharine and cheesy romantic comedies, they make me feel good and I can escape from real life for at least an hour or two. I don't feel depressed or scared to go to sleep for fear that someone is going to slash my throat or a zombie is going to come out from under my bed , I can go home lay my head down and escape into my dreams with no problems.
Now , with that being said I want to watch Cloverfield mostly because of my intense curiosity of finding out the identity of this monster that is destroying New York. I have been scouring the internet for weeks looking for bootleg movie clips or pictures that might give away this tightly kept secret . I have had no luck so far so it looks like I am going to go and watch and prepare to be frightened! I do like monster movies because they are really not scary , they are usually pretty cheesy and involve some pretty cool action sequences .
I will let you in on my thoughts and criticisms next week until then check out the trailers for these movies and maybe i'll see you at the cinema! Save me a seat will ya?

Heath Ledger

Sad news today from New York; actor Heath Ledger was found dead at his downtown Manhattan apartment this afternoon. NYPD says pills were found near his body and his death may be drug related according to the Associated Press.
Ledger was a talented actor with a bright future in front of him. He was filming a movie in London and preparing for the release of The Dark Knight where he took on the role of The Joker. Ledger leaves behind a two-year old daughter .
I fear that we will be seeing more celebrities breakdown because of the intense media scrutiny. It is unbelievable the aggressiveness of photographers trying to get that million dollar shot . Celebrities can't even experience private moments of periods of their lives without people following them around every where they go. It's out of hand and I think there need to be laws against this behavior a redefining of privacy laws . Celebrities need to start fighting back and lobbying for change .
